My colleague Jonathan Smith took part in SVG Europe’s lively panel discussion Live Cloud Production: Dispelling some myths, which set out to explore the reality of working in the cloud. Responding to the assertion that ‘cloud saves money,’ Smith explained that it’s not always the case. It is a key point. Using Cloud to host virtual workflows in a live remote production is not only more cost efficient but unlocks the capacity to produce much more with fewer resources. Based on ffmpeg I developed and open sourced a live encoder service that provides a REST API and Web User Interface to start and stop the ffmpeg encoder. This code is now available as a service in Open Source Cloud. This means that you can try this out without having to have your own infrastructure for it at first. But if you later decide you want to run it on your own infrastructure there is nothing preventing you from it, as the code is open source and available on GitHub. Ross Video is excited to announce the official release of XPression version 12.0, starting with XPression 12.0 Build 5958. Amazing new features like support for importing Type III LUT files, using the Adobe .CUBE format, allow XPression users to conform to the WCG and HDR settings of the entire production simply by importing the settings files. Additional support for color material shaders to extend into the WCG ranges we working with XPression Projects with color space settings in the HDR workflows. VANC Data can now be selected between inputs using track assignments on the Scene Director, to allow the animation to define items like closed-captioning from one input or another during an animation with live video inputs. Secondary performance meters have been added and reflect video decoding and texture memory updates during playout. The XPression Sequencer UI now allows users to undock and scale Server Channel Viewports for improved visual confirmation of Clips playback. Audio now follows the video transition settings per channel to allow for cross-fading of audio between Take Items. XPression Project Server now supports the use of TLS encryption and has file diagnostics tools.FairPlay scoreboards have been added to XPression Datalinq, along with OAuth2 for RSS/HTTP DataLinq sources. The DataLinq Server now checks to make sure that only once instance is running to prevent accidental overwriting of DataLinq configurations, as well as the ability to export only Enabled DataLinqs. I've been attending "The Fifth Elephant" conference - https://lnkd.in/dnwCN_2H, online or in-person since 2016 and always walk away learning something new and feeling a strong sense of community. I'm happy that I now have the chance to give back to the community - I'm hosting an online workshop on fine-tuning LLMs! I've always been fascinated by the creative storytelling process and how AI can enrich this. As the dust settles, I’m still thinking about the many topics raised during #DPP's leaders briefing last week; a few stand out: -             the raise of Ai, -             the need for operators to slash costs and become more efficient, -             the need for humans and machines to live and work together. The harsh reality: old business models for traditional media have changed, gone, never to return. Golden ages of big budgets are extinct and will not come back. New media, more nimble players, prosumer content generators and new platforms have taken away audiences (and ad spend). But the general attitude is to ignore the elephant in the room and continue trying to address these new problems with old recipes: cutting costs and laying off people; consolidating media conglomerates into bigger entities; outsource jobs to cheaper geos... while the solution is in front of us: Broadcasters will need to transform in order to survive. Fully transform. Not just adapt or replace some legacy systems with newer ones. This could mean a lot of things: -             share operations and technical infrastructure between competitors; -             fastly adopt Ai and cloud-based workflows to replace half (if not all) the repetitive tasks a media house does; -             find new partnerships and distribution outlets but ultimately, broadcasters and media creators should concentrate on reaching their audiences and stop caring about how the sausage is made. Broadcasters are ultimately content creators and distributors, not tech or software companies. Humans will still be needed to focus on creating good content that is relevant and engaging, and to devise strategies that meet audiences where they are. Humans will not be needed to run the technology enabling content to reach audiences. Moreover, in today’s content everywhere (and anywhere) world, personalization is key; and ultra personalization will ultimately win. The right content, delivered through the right channels. Technology is here to aid content creators. And yes, a lot of jobs will be replaced by tech. There is no other way of saying it, and no point avoiding the issue. We’ve seen this happen over the past 100 years in every other industry, only now it’s happening more rapidly. Operations need to be lean. Very lean. Because the landscape is a fast-moving jungle, and you are never the apex predator. Thoughts? #Ai #transformation #digitalage #godigitalorbust

A fascinating discussion and learning experience with SMPTE United Kingdom Section last night at their Cloud Practitioners Forum event at AWS in London. With Martin Richards discussing real world cloud transition, what he has learned from his experiences. And what we can all learn from him. Also with a great summary from from Ian Trow With cloud technology now available to address so many areas of the media chain it can be oh so important to understand the different forms of cloud and what exactly is the right implementation for different workflows. Media business moving on that transitionary path to cloud environments need to stop and think about what the business motivations for cloud are. Do you know the limitations of the cloud environment that you are seeking to deploy ? What is the appetite for Risk? - Because cloud has different risks to classical implementations. And are you reviewing the business case against the original targets? Martin gave us some sage advice - It is So important to reimagine how you work compared to traditional deployments. Cloud is a new way of thinking. And cloud can be hard! It can be expensive, so take advantage of all cost savings commercial offers and go in with your eyes open! In terms of practical deployments, organizations who have made the most successful deployments have started with some core guidelines: Exploit as much cloud SaaS as you can. Build to automate - Products need to be “APIs first” Build for spikes and scalability. And build with security and data observability at your core. A migration to cloud can feel like an big change from the people perspective too. Many think of as a radically new technology, requiring new skills and potentially new people. In many ways that can be true. But it is absolutely key to success that you don’t loose your broadcast knowledge. And that is what the knowledge sharing #SMPTE events are all about. #cloud #mediaproduction
